18" Doll: Pantry Boxes

These are "pantry boxes", or also referred to as "firkins".
They were used to keep food clean and away from pests (hopefully!) before we had mass marketed packaging and refrigeration.  The originals were hand-made from wood (so these are not historically accurate).
This was a fun home-school project for my daughter.  We got to paint.  We talked about history of how food was stored.  She even pondered what things you could NOT easily have before refrigeration.  (WHAT!! NO popsicles??)

We simply used some small round cardboard boxes (these are from Hobby Lobby), painted them in basic muted tones, and then lightly sanded them at the edges to give them a "worn" effect.

Simple and fun, and a bit of history, too!
